Walking tour Schöntal - Windau valley
From Rettenstein via the Gamskogelhütte
The start of this tour is the Hintenbachalm in Aschau valley. We follow the steep hunters path in the direction of the Schöntalalm and reach this in about 1.5 hours. We follow the route Nr. 21 direction Rettenstein, passing the Schöntal Schlern and shouldn't miss out the 100m to the Schöntalquelle. The hill climb (very steep) takes us in direction of the Rettenstein summit 2,366m above sea level.
We reach this in about 1.5 hours from the Schöntal Alm. On the return journey we leave path Nr. 21 and follow the Arnoweg Nr. 715 in direction Schöntaljoch. This path takes us along the border between Tyrol and Salzburg at an altitude of approx. 2.000m, passing the Gernscharte and the Laubkogel to Herrensteigscharte where we brach of in direction Geigenscharte. From the Geigenscharte we continue downwards on the steep path Nr. 85. This path takes us past a small sheltered hut and then we reach the Miesenbachalm.
We follow a dirt track for a few hundred meters, branching of onto a path in direction Tagweidalm at which point we reach approx. 8hours. After crossing the Windau stream we have reached our gaol, the Gamskogelhütte. This is a Tyrolean Inn and Peter the innkeeper is also the chef. For this tour good walking boots and good condition is necessary.
